Cups into compost

Huhtamaki’s Bioware range of bio-coated paper cups can now be composted as part of a new collection scheme offered by Save a Cup.
“Huhtamaki is extremely pleased to be associated with Save a Cup and its latest initiative, which is the first collection scheme of its kind in the UK,” explained John Young, General Manager, Huhtamaki Foodservice UK and Ireland. “We are keen to work with government agencies and other organisations to develop effective environmental processes, especially as we manufacture BioWare, a successful range of environmentally-friendly foodservice disposables”.
The new scheme will enable workplaces to send their used compostable BioWare cups to industrial composting facilities across the UK. Once at the sites, the cups will be mixed with food and green waste to speed up the composting process, and will then be turned into quality compost for use in farming and horticulture.
Cups must be separated from other types of waste, like plastic and ordinary paper cups, and drink cans, and disposed of in Save a Cup compostable bin bags.
The new scheme will help reduce waste within the establishment, as well as help divert thousands of cups away from landfill sites and minimise the harmful greenhouse gases that would otherwise be produced in these sites from non-composted waste.
Under the scheme, workplaces will be able to meet their environmental targets and satisfy their corporate recycling policies. Furthermore, by reducing waste sent to landfill, businesses will potentially be able to reduce the amount of landfill tax they pay. Information about the areas in which the scheme operates can be obtained by email – composting@saveacup.co.uk.
