Breathing new life into vending

We find out why machine refurbishment is on the up

In its 2011 Automatic Vending Market Report, Key Note revealed that the volume of machines fell across all three sectors in 2010. Sources agree that while new purchases continue to be made, where cost is paramount, an increasing number of operators are looking more closely at the refurbishment option.

To what extent a machine is refurbished really depends on the customer's specification. A reputable company will inspect and assess a machine before explaining what work is required and how much it will cost. The machine will be stripped back to its carcass, steam cleaned and repaired as necessary.

The outside of the cabinet will be given a new lease of life by being re-sprayed to match the existing paint or to a colour chosen by the customer. The internal parts will then be replaced or repaired as required before the machine is rebuilt. As much of the original components of a machine are retained as possible, with remanufactured components combined with any necessary new ones.

The machine should then be put through vigorous safety tests and checked for optimum functionality before being returned to the customer. If all of this is done correctly and the work is to a high standard, the refurbished machine will look and work as good as new.

Although it’s common for an existing machine to be bought new and refurbished later, refurbished machines have also become a popular first choice. Refurbished vending machines and second-hand vending machines are usually ex-lease and tend to range from between 3 and 6 years old. Though the purchase of a new vending machine will offer the customer peace of mind and more up to date technology, where budgets are limited a refurbished or second-hand vending machine is a good alternative solution.

Refurbished and second-hand vending machines can, however, very much vary in terms of quality and price; but they do represent good value for money. When a machine has been refurbished to a high standard, it is almost impossible to distinguish it from a new one.

If you are looking for a company to refurbish an existing machine or wish to buy a refurbished model, make sure the company works to a strict code of conduct and quality standard before you enter into any contract with them.
