There has been a noticeable change in the public’s general attitudes towards ethically sourced and sustainable products over the past decade. With an ever increasing number of businesses and local authorities putting sustainability and ethical sourcing at the heart of their corporate social responsibility, it is now more important than ever before for businesses offering hot beverage vending services to be able to show 100 per cent commitment. Beyond the accepted norm of sustainable sourcing, it is now possible to offer consumers and operators full transparency and traceability, so that they can find out exactly where and how their coffee products are produced. This adds yet another factor into the equation of which brand and blend of coffee a vending operator should choose.
Olivier Kutz, Brand Manager at Douwe Egberts Coffee Systems UK, commented: “People are increasingly concerned that the producers of their goods are getting a fair deal and businesses keen to promote a greener image are buying into the benefits of ethical and sustainable vending as a result.”
Douwe Egberts recently launched a brand new range of premium instant coffee vending solutions, which includes its well-established Goodorigin brand. Developed specifically for the workplace, healthcare, travel and leisure and education sectors, the range offers consumers the quality reassurance that they now require. The company’s Goodorigin brand is made from beans produced at Utz certified farms and is fully traceable from farm to cup allowing each cup of coffee to be traced back to the farm and country it originated from.
Utz Certified, a global non-governmental organisation, is one of the leading programmes that supports sustainable coffee production. It operates a well-respected certification programme that enables farmers to achieve a better price for their green coffee, through a change in farming methods leading to much higher quality output. The programme is based on all aspects of farming, economic, social responsibility and protecting the local environment, with the objective of creating a long term sustainable and stable business model that profits not only small growers, but also workers employed in larger estates and cooperatives. We believe that this is where the future of ethically sourced products lies, as businesses and consumers can trace their coffee to its origins and see the positive impact their choice of coffee has made in that area.
When an Utz Certified coffee producer sells his coffee to a registered Utz buyer, the coffee is announced in Utz’s web-based system. The organisation then assigns a unique tracking number to this lot of coffee. This unique number travels with the coffee through the whole coffee chain. At the end of the coffee chain, the roaster uses the unique tracking number to know where his coffee was grown. Douwe Egberts takes the traceability a stage further by allowing consumers to use this unique tracking system to trace beans in a Goodorigin cup of coffee back to the farm it was produced at using a unique barcode tracking system, the first introduced in the UK.
Olivier Kutz added: “As a global company we have a responsibility to conduct business in a manner that supports the well being of people and our planet. Our responsibility to maintain levels of ethical and sustainable practice is evident through our work with Utz Certified, as well as our investment in the Douwe Egberts Foundation. We feel it is important to place a focus on training farmers to become more professional, producing better quality coffee whilst protecting their local environment and having access to decent living conditions.”
