The EVA - it's crystal-clear!
says Catherine Piana, Director General

This year, the European Vending Association celebrates its 15th birthday - the crystal anniversary of a marriage. Crystal is precious, crystal is clear and, so we trust, is the EVA for its members.  Of course, you never measure the value of anything until it's lost... so for the sake of argument, let us imagine what it would now be like if there were no EVA.

The EVA's main mission is to protect the vending industry against adverse legislation. Here are some concrete examples of how operators would fare today without the support of the EVA:

  • Operators would have to deal with large amounts of counterfeit euro coins in their cash boxes
  • They would have had to invest in banknote readers for every single machine that accepts coins
  • There would no longer be any vending machines in European schools
  • The price per litre of coffee or hot chocolate would have to be labelled on each machine
  • Hygiene and traceability rules would be impossible and, anyway, operators would have no indication of how to implement them
  • Each manufacturer would have its own standards, which would be incompatible with their competitors, permanently binding operators to one manufacturer

These are just a few examples of what the industry would look like if there hadn't been an EVA.  But, of course, I'm sure that members will find more examples where they have benefitted from our existence and from our services.

Just like crystal, the EVA's success is due to a unique combination of good material (our staff), skilled representatives (on our committees), and a lot of hard work (from all of us!).

I'd like to thank all those visionary people, who have set up and developed the EVA: Presidents, Executive and Committee Members, and of course our Members, including companies and national associations. Without their efforts and commitment, the EVA would not have become the respected and credible association that it is today.

But we must not be complacent. There were many successes, and there are many threats and challenges ahead.  We need all the energies of the vending players to overcome the challenges and seize a wealth of opportunities out there.

Happy Anniversary, EVA!
