Tri-Star, the food packaging solution provider, has designed and developed the first-ever biodegradable and biocompostible, PLA base web sandwich pack for The Sandwich Factory, one of the largest sandwich suppliers in the UK and the first retail supplier to run with this innovative packaging solution.
Kevin Curran, Tri-Star Packaging's Managing Director, said: "The revolutionary pack is made of a black PLA base and biodegradable film. The product was in development for over a year and saw the use of the latest cutting edge materials."
Tri-Star secured the business when The Sandwich Factory won a major sandwich contract with a forward thinking national transport operator which insisted on the company supplying high quality sandwiches in biodegradable packaging from sustainable sources.
The biodegradable sandwich wedge is an environmentally-friendly alternative to petroleum-based plastic wedges. The specially formulated material is manufactured from Polylactic acid (PLA), a polymer produced from lactic acid that derives from dextrose obtained from corn starch. It is strong, lightweight and will biodegrade in weeks under the right conditions. Besides being entirely natural, the biodegradable sandwich wedges are functional and totally safe for all types of food.
Jonathan Brooks at The Sandwich Factory, said: "We have been working hard over the last twelve months to develop this environmentally friendly packaging solution with Tri-Star and are delighted with the outcome. Not only is PLA biodegradable, but more importantly to us, it is produced from sustainable sources which meet our strict company policy guidelines for the environment.
