Solo Cup Europe claims to be is the first food packaging manufacturer to contract with the new Closed Loop facility for the provision of recycled PET (RPET) for the production of PET disposables for the foodservice and food-to-go sectors.
Its contract for the supply of RPET will enable the company to be first to market with a range of fully recycled and recyclable disposable products using material from Closed Loop London, marking a step-change in UK food disposables manufacture.
At the launch of the new Closed Loop London* facility in June, Tony Waters, Managing Director of Solo Cup Europe said: "Obtaining food grade recycled PET from a UK source is what is significant about this agreement. We have decided against supply from sources outside the UK and of non food grade in favour of championing the closed loop principle. This way packaging used for food products will be recycled back into packaging for food products."
Closed Loop London aims to take 35,000 tonnes of recovered plastic every year and turn it back into recycled food grade, raw material, ready to be made by manufacturers such as Solo Cup Europe, back into new food and drink packaging.
Chris Dow, Managing Director of Closed Loop London, paid tribute to Solo Cup Europe's vision at the launch. He said: "It is the vision and commitment of companies like Solo Cup Europe that have made this new facility happen. They understood, they committed at the outset."
Solo Cup Europe is taking 20 per cent of the RPET output from Closed Loop. The company is continually improving its environmental performance through working practices, the exploration and application of new materials and formats, minimising energy consumption and reducing all types of waste.
The company has also announced the sponsorship of the Closed Loop Office Recycling Scheme which is pioneering the recycling of materials, particularly food packaging in the workplace, initially in London. Adds Tony Waters: "We are the first UK manufacturer to recognise the significant environmental benefits this will deliver."
Solo Cup Europe manufactures single use packaging and disposables for the retail and foodservice industries. It brings to market ranges of cups and containers in paper board and plastic materials. Its customers include major international retail coffee brands, retail supermarkets and foodservice contract service providers. It is also committed to the independent sector through its network of valued distributors. The business has some 400 employees serving customers in the UK, Europe and Middle East. It is part of US business Solo Cup.
