Paper Cup Company toasts success
Published:  14 August, 2008

A company which supplies paper cups to the vending industry is toasting three years of success - and aiming to crack the two million cup barrier. Mark Woodward established The Paper Cup Company, at Worston, Clitheroe, three years ago with his partner Jenny. Today it supplies a wide range of sectors, including vending, independent coffee bars, milk bars and multi nationals for tasting campaigns.

Mark said: "We have penetrated the paper cup market by offering short print runs and small minimum orders with a quick turnaround, and that has led to more companies coming to us. "They are moving from plastic to paper packaging for environmental reasons and we are happy to look at new things as we are specialise in satisfying customer requirements."

Mark, who has 30 years' experience in the disposable cup market, said: "We have set ourselves some pretty steep targets over the three years. We set off with an initial aim in year one of selling 250,000 cups. Last year we sold 850,000, and our target for this year is now two million."

He revealed that 40 per cent of sales result from a successful website created for him by a team at Lancaster University's InfoLab21 - one of the pioneering business support projects at Lancaster University which has helped create jobs in the last two years.

Mark said: "The website that they created has been massively important to The Paper Cup Company. Totally tailored to our needs, it and was delivered to us in such a way that we can update it with ease. That was very important to us, and they really listened to what we needed and delivered exactly what we were looking for.

"The website has been a huge benefit to the company in terms of getting our name out into the marketplace and in securing orders. As a young business, having Lancaster University there to help and guide us has been fantastic. We've also been on courses at the university that have helped us with marketing and have just built up our knowledge base."

InfoLab21, which is one of the largest and most significant ICT research establishments worldwide, holds Lancaster University's departments of Computing and Communication Systems. It is a well-equipped, high-tech environment shared by academic research staff, research students and businesses.

InfoLab21 acts as a link between businesses and academics, facilitates joint research projects and supports new opportunities for academic and business engagement and technology transfer.
