The way to 5-a-day
Published:  13 March, 2008

California Raisins has been active within the schools environment, encouraging children to eat a healthy balanced diet. The company believes that there are two key elements to this - eating the right amount of food depending on how active you are and buiilding a balanced diet, which consists of a range of foods.

For example:

  • more fruit and vegetables;
  • more starchy foods such as rice, bread, pasta (choosing wholegrain varieties when possible);
  • some protein-rich foods such as meat, fish, eggs and pulses;
  • less fat, salt and sugar.
Most people, insists California Raisins, do not eat enough fruit and vegetables. In a recent press article it was estimated that only 44 per cent of schoolchildren in England consume five portions of fruit and vegetables daily. However, this is up from 27 per cent in 2004, so there clearly a positive trend, although still a long way to go.

California Raisins are claimed to be perfect for helping with healthy eating. One tablespoon is equivalent to one portion of fruit, making it easy to satisfy the daily 5-a-day requirement, and they contain many vitamins and minerals including, copper, zinc, magnesium and calcium.

Not only are California Raisins a basic natural food, but they also fulfil a very important role as a food ingredient. Raisins are the most concentrated, commonly available fruit for cooking, adding both flavour and nutrition. They complement all types of dishes, from salads and main meals to dessert. Additionally, they are a delicious and energy packed snack all by themselves, for children and adults alike.
