The case for re use and recycling is overwhelming; worldwide pressure on raw materials and the rapidly decreasing number of landfill sites support the case. The key is to ensure that action taken by Government is as practical and cost effective as possible.
After more than 10 years development, starting in Brussels, the UK Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) legislation finally came into effect on July 1 2007.
UK Vending Industry Response
The Automatic Vending Association realized early on the need to protect our Industry and was instrumental in identifying the potential costs the legislation posed and in helping the key vending equipment suppliers come together to form c10c.
C10c is the not for profit company set up by all of the leading equipment suppliers to ensure that the UK Vending Industry WEEE obligations are handled in the most cost effective manner. C10c has actively engaged with Government to make sure that the final legislation is as practical as possible.
Despite the many delays and lack of clarity from Government along the way, the final UK legislation does provide for a sensible, cost effective response for our Industry.
C10c has established a partnership with DHL, world renowned for its logistics expertise, to provide a national scheme for handling WEEE arising and the scheme has been LIVE for several months.
In addition to the c10c national scheme, the legislation also provides the facility for customers to assume the responsibility for WEEE. The Vending industry has an excellent record for re use and as such some customers already have local solutions. They have opted out of the c10c scheme and continue to use existing disposal routes.
We recognize that up to now the Government has adopted a ‘light touch' approach to imposing the legislation. Moving forward this is likely to change and impact on some of the existing local solutions; making them more expensive or not available.
The message from c10c on behalf of the Vending Industry is that we are taking our environmental responsibilities seriously and we will ensure that our response to WEEE obligations and any future environmental legislation is both practical and cost effective.
Look out for those Producers displaying the c10c logo - you can be assured they have the right WEEE credentials.
