Why Imporient is a member of the Ethical Tea Partnership
Published:  20 January, 2008

Tea company Imporient is a member of the Ethical Tea Partnership (ETP). This is a non-commercial alliance of major tea packing companies working together to promote social responsibility in the world tea trade and ensure the ethical sourcing of tea.

ETP defines ethical trade as a shared responsibility to ensure that the social and ethical conditions involved in growing the tea that its members buy meets, at a minimum, local laws, trade union agreements and some international standards, and to encourage improvements where needed. ETP does this through independent monitoring of six key areas of tea estate life: employment (including minimum age and wage levels), education, maternity, health and safety, housing and some areas of basic rights.

Tea producers meeting the standard required are awarded a graded certificate as proof of their compliance. Where issues are identified, ETP works with the estates to ensure improvements are made within realistic time frames.
