Barclaycard Business has signed up more than 1000 retail outlets for OneTouch, its in-store contactless payment technology, including major high street names EAT and Krispy Kreme. Having announced its intention to introduce contactless payments to the UK last year, Barclaycard Business now predicts that several thousand retail outlets will be ready to accept contactless payments.
Other big names signed up to OneTouch include Coffee Republic, Threshers, Books Etc, YO! Sushi and the Science Museum. Interest in the new technology has come from a range of retail sectors including 229 coffee and food outlets and 214 newsagents, and comes ahead of the launch of Barclaycard OnePulse, the new 3-in-1 card featuring Oyster, credit and contactless functionality, which was launched last autumn.
With Barclaycard Business OneTouch terminals installed, retailers will be able to offer their customers a fast and convenient method of payment on all transactions of £10 and under. Cardholders will simply need to make OneTouch of their card against the reader instead of entering a PIN or signature.
Judith Denby, Marketing Director of Krispy Kreme said: "This quick and easy payment method means that our customers will be able to spend less time in a queue and more time enjoying their coffee and doughnuts. It will also make busy periods far more manageable for us and we'll be able to process more transactions in a shorter time which will hopefully mean that customers visit us again and again because of the hassle free experience."
Speed and convenience
"In recent months, we have seen a surge of retailers looking to adopt the OneTouch technology and the thought of so many being able to offer this revolutionary payment solution by autumn is very exciting for the whole industry. OneTouch offers both retailers and customers a secure method of payment that will help to cut down those heavy London rush hour queues," said Bill Thomson, Managing Director, Barclaycard Business.
The technology is particularly suited for outlets where fast and convenient transactions are a necessity - fast food outlets, coffee shops, newsagents, off licences, bars, pubs, parking facilities and vending machines.
A Barclaycard spokesperson said: "We see contactless technology as very important to the vending machine sector and are in discussions with a number of vending suppliers about how the technology can help their business. We will also be installing a contactless enabled vending machine in our head office soon."
