Rollover, the leading hot dog company in the UK foodservice industry, is currently investing in a major marketing campaign including a full re-branding exercise. The new branding and logo are appearing all over the country wherever Rollover hot dogs are sold. That includes 64 out of 92 Premier and Football League Clubs. VI spoke to Sales & Marketing Director Tony Owen (previously regional director of Nestle Foodservices) about Rollover’s determination to strengthen their already powerful position as the leading brand and the innovator in the market.
VI - Rollover has embarked on venture with Walkabout bars, how did this come about?
TO - Effectively it was the coming together of two agendas. At Rollover we are always looking to expand into new channels and have been very successful in sports stadia. We strongly believe that the concept would be just as successful in sports driven bars and the wider pub and bar market.
Walkabout were looking to develop a quick and easy food offering at a time when the bars are very busy and Rollover Hot Dogs fit the brief exactly.
VI - With the smoking ban and loss of revenue, how do you see your product helping to bring revenues back into pubs & clubs?
TO - If it’s driven by those at site level it’s an easy way for a pub or club to achieve additional revenue. You don’t need skilled staff or a kitchen and the quality of the Rollover product is excellent and, very importantly, it’s also consistent. The smoking ban means more movement within a pub with people going outside so putting POS or a cart in a high traffic zone on a busy night is the best idea. So many pubs and bars lose food revenue to the ‘after pub’ market. There is a definite opportunity to keep it all in-house. Adding an easy food offering to the menu on a busy night is an easy way to make additional revenue. Wet sales will also increase for two reasons. Firstly customers enjoy hot dogs so it adds to their night out experience, which means they will spend more on beer. Secondly, if you offer food, people stay longer and therefore drink more.
VI - Will the food hygiene/licensing legislation affect company’s purchasing/ taking on board your equipment?
TO - No.
VI - Explain how you will package the “Rollover” concept?
TO - Rollover is about three things, providing high quality products, offering first class service and support and enabling the operator to make great financial returns. We provide equipment free on loan when and where required. There is no cooking involved just heating, which means that a kitchen is not a requirement and we provide training and a full marketing package including point of sale and items such as loyalty cards and menu clips. We can work any element of our package to meet customer requirements.
VI - Will you be looking at direct sales or have the package on offer to operators throughout the UK?
TO - We operate across the length and breadth of the country, as well as overseas and primarily on a direct basis with day one for day two delivery. Our offering is full service so we do everything from the sausage and bread to the sauce and packaging. We have a team of people all dedicated to customers and customer service.
VI - This is an exciting time for Rollover. What are your long terms plans?
TO - Our plans are to continue to expand our hot dog business both in existing areas and new areas, as well as look to offer new and exciting products and concepts that add real benefits to operators in all sectors.
VI - What would you say to an organisation hesitant to take the hot food route?
TO - Put simply, there is no need to be hesitant as it’s a great opportunity.
Would you buy your vending machines and equipment from the world-wide-web?
