Van Houten® and Barry Callebaut responding to the demand for Fairtrade beverages
Published:  01 August, 2007

As consumers continue to have a thirst for knowledge where products are grown, Barry Callebaut are working very closely with the Fairtrade Foundation to source its Fairtrade cocoa from the Conacado cooperative in the Dominican Republic and the Fairtrade white cane sugar through Oxfam Fairtrade and one of its producers Cooperativa Cañera de San Ramón in Costa Rica.

The cocoa and sugar farmers receive a guaranteed minimum price and the Fairtrade premium, a bonus to be spent on community projects. Among the benefits of belonging to a group is the interest-free loans farmers can get, along with fertiliser and new young cocoa plants.

When Barry Callebaut took the initiative over three years ago to develop a product specifically designed for vending and dispenses machines, the Company recognised that there was a growing demand from their clients for this style of product. “It is a question of offering operators and wholesalers the opportunity of responding to this demand. Also, from a health perspective, this product contains no trans fatty acids which is also uppermost in people’s consciousness at this time,” reflects Martyn Herriott, UK National Account Manager, Beverages. “These companies supply many administrations and businesses where the works councils are more and more aware of the Fairtrade option - all the more so where ethical labels are recognised in Western Countries.”

This Van Houten® beverage has become the most significant Fairtrade product in the vending and HoReCa marketplace from Barry Callebaut who are the World’s number 1 cocoa, chocolate and beverage ingredient supplier. The Company is promoting the profile and impact of Van Houten® Fairtrade chocolate in all types of beverage equipment by offering machine labels and stickers for the product.
