- It is thought that vending was started in 215BC. The ancient Greeks had invented the urn and placed it within a Egyptian temple, worshippers would place their coin and be dispensed a certain amount of holy water. .
- Post card vending was popular in the early 1880s, and the first coin operated vending machines were invented in London. Richard Carlisle invented a books vending machine and coin acceptor mechanisms that distinguish genuine coins from fake made vending machines become more popular.
- The first vending machine in United States was located on the subway platforms in New York City. It was invented by The Thomas Adams Company and dispensed Tutti Frutti gum. The Pulver Manufacturing Company introduced the first animated gum vending machines in 1897 and Gumball and round candy vending machines were introduced in 1907.
- Horn & Hadart (1902-1962) was a completely coin-operated restaurant in Philadelphia.
- In 1926, William Rowe from America invented a cigarette-vending machine and quick to follow we saw in 1965, canned soft drinks vending machines being invented.
- Then in 1981, the ‘talking’ vending machines were invented and up to date we can now vend just about anything.
