It's all very well receiving detailed product training and memorising flow rates and media properties, but when you're on one end of the phone and the engineer is on the other, how much are you really going to learn about his requirements? With that in mind, Aqua Cure Business Development Manager Steve Watson headed to Brontė Water Coolers Ltd in Huddersfield to meet Matt Lawton, their P.O.U. Manager. "The basic idea," says Steve, "is to go and see what he does at each site. To get a feel for what he does and to see things from the side of the people we're selling to."
Brontė originally started out bottling water from the spring after which they are named. Increasingly though, they are moving more and more into P.O.U. coolers and dispensers. Like Aqua Cure, they're EPDWA recognised and it's this side of the business Steve has come to see.
After a quick tour of the warehouse, it's off to the first job of the day. On site, Matt's 5 years of experience with water coolers are quickly evident. "Thorough" is the first word Steve uses to describe him working. "He worked quickly and efficiently and always put safety first."
Matt explains what he is doing: "Someone has turned off the shut-off valve," he says. He checks there are no leaks in the cooler before reopening the valve and showing his customer what has happened and how.
Job done, it's off to the second site of the day, this one in Leeds. This time a waterblock has tripped out. Matt finds the isolators and shuts off the water supply (always safety first) before resetting the waterblock. The cooler was also missing a tap, for which Matt quickly located a replacement in his van.
It's not all servicing and repairs though, one of the sites Steve visited with Matt required the full installation of a P.O.U. Cooler. For this job Matt has a trolley neatly stocked with all the spanners, drills, compression fittings, shut-offs and tubing he needs for the job. It's here that Steve gets the best insight into how our products are used as the majority of these items are supplied by Aqua Cure. So why does Matt keep coming back to Aqua Cure?
"It's not just the convenience of next day delivery or of being able to find so many competitively priced items under one roof," he tells Steve, "it's also a matter of quality." Matt finds the Mains Installation Kits he's using today, made in-house at Aqua Cure, to be the highest quality of any available.
In less than 20 minutes, the job is done and a brand new cooler stands ready for use. This man works fast!
So, with his day long visit to Brontė at an end, what has Steve learned from the experience?
"It's highlighted areas, product-wise, where we can better help our customers," Steve tells me. "I've now got more understanding of what our customers want, from their tools as well as their consumables."
A worthwhile experience all round then: Aqua Cure are constantly increasing their already vast product range and the knowledge Steve has gained will inform future decisions by Aqua Cure about which new product lines should be introduced. Brontė, meanwhile, will be the ultimate beneficiaries of this as they will be able to get their parts, tools and consumables from a single supplier, all of the same high quality that they've come to expect.
The visit also means Steve and Matt can now put a face to the voice on the other end of the phone, and this can only strengthen the already strong relationship between Brontė and Aqua Cure.
