More than just coffee
At Nestlé® they understand the importance of sourcing coffee beans ethically wherever possible, and believe that the principles of long term sustainable development are fundamental to the business.

The company works on several platforms to guarantee the sustainability of the coffee it buys. For example, Nestlé operates the world's largest direct purchasing scheme, which allows farmers to deliver coffee directly to its buying stations and so keep more of their income. It is also committed to the Common Code for the Coffee Community (4C) global code of conduct which brings sustainability into the mainstream supply chain.

Fairtrade brand Nescafé® Partners' Blend® was launched in 2005 to develop a product that not only meets the standards of the FAIRTRADE Mark, but also customer needs. The coffee delivers the quality and taste characteristics of Nescafé that consumers enjoy.

Ethical nation

There is no doubt that more and more consumers are now aware of ethical business practices. Consumers are becoming more discerning and are now looking to purchase sustainable food and beverages wherever possible.

On the whole, demand for ethical products has risen significantly across the majority of sectors in 2008. For example, in schools, colleges and universities, it appears today's students are putting just that little extra thought into their purchasing decision when it comes to drinking ‘on the go'.

With this growing trend for ethically sourced products comes a tough decision for commercially focused purchasers, including catering managers for whom it is important to provide a sustainable solution to tap into this burgeoning industry and demonstrate their commitment to the welfare of their students as well as those outside the establishment. For these managers, it's a question of balance, they require an ethical product that students enjoy whilst meeting their corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments. Schools, colleges and universities are willing to pay the right price for brands with a long term heritage in sustainability - brands they can trust that ultimately deliver for their business.

Sustainable coffee is high priority

"At Nestlé Professional, the foodservice division of Nestlé® SA in the UK, we are not only passionate about hot beverages we're also passionate about ethical sourcing", says David Field, Managing Director, Nestlé Professional. "In fact, with 80 per cent of the business based in beverages, sustainable coffee sourcing is a high priority.

"Within our vending business, our premium soluble coffee Nescafé Partners' Blend, made using high quality 100 per cent washed Arabica beans, is sourced from Fairtrade Certified Co-Operatives in some of the poorest coffee growing regions.

"Within Nestlé Professional vending, Nescafé Partners' Blend delivers a smooth, balanced, aromatic taste as expected from the nation's favourite coffee1. Each bean has been selected for its quality, as well as the fact that the producers are 100 per cent Fairtrade certified, and carefully roasted for a greater depth of flavour and aromatic delicacy."

The coffee is available in 300g vending bags and, as part of providing a premium solution, fully branded machines are also available with eye-catching graphics.
